The Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Non-Technical Trainee Programme is a structured, 18-month workplace experience initiative managed by the Youth Development Department. Specifically designed for TVET college students who have completed their N4–N6 theoretical studies, this programme bridges the gap between academic learning and corporate practice. Trainees gain practical exposure, professional mentorship, and hands-on operational training required to obtain their National N Diploma.

Key Responsibilities & Workstream Exposure

Under direct mentorship, WIL trainees will gain practical exposure across four primary operational pillars:

1. Operational & Administrative Execution

  • Departmental Support: Assist in executing daily operational tasks, administrative workflows, document processing, and record keeping.
  • Project Assistance: Participate in specialized departmental projects within Human Resources, Marketing, Finance, or Office Administration.

2. Research, Analysis & Reporting

  • Data Collection: Conduct basic market research, data gathering, and operational metrics analysis to support business decisions.
  • Reporting: Prepare summaries, meeting minutes, and presentations using Microsoft Office applications.

3. Stakeholder Communication & Collaboration

  • Query Resolution: Serve as an administrative point of contact for routine queries from internal teams, suppliers, and external partners.
  • Cross-Functional Teamwork: Shadow experienced professionals to learn corporate workflows and team dynamics.

4. Governance & Compliance

  • Policy Adherence: Follow Transnet policies, ethics guidelines, data privacy standards, and safety regulations.

Candidate Profile & Mandatory Selection Criteria

To qualify for this 18-month TVET WIL opportunity, candidates must meet the following entry criteria:

  • Academic Qualifications: Must have completed all theoretical coursework (N4, N5, and N6) in one of the following non-technical TVET fields:
    • Human Resource Management
    • Financial Management
    • Marketing Management
    • Business / Office Management
  • Institutional Letter: Must possess an official In-Service Training Letter from your TVET Institution requesting workplace placement for the WIL programme.
  • Obligation Status: Must have no bursary obligations with any other company.
  • Youth & Citizenship Status:
    • South African Citizen.
    • Aged between 18 and 35 years old.
    • Equity Target: Preference will be given to applicants with disabilities in line with Transnet’s Employment Equity Plan.
  • Locations: Based in or able to commute to Johannesburg or Durban.
