The Transnet Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Non-Technical Trainee Programme is an 18-month structured workplace exposure opportunity designed for TVET college students and recent N6 graduates. Situated within the Transnet Corporate Centre, this programme provides hands-on administrative training, professional mentorship, and real-world operational experience across Transnet’s KwaZulu-Natal offices in Durban, Pietermaritzburg, and Richards Bay.

Key Responsibilities & Core Workstreams

During the 18-month traineeship, learners will contribute to four key operational workstreams:

1. Administrative & Operational Support

  • Documentation Control: Perform daily administrative functions, record-keeping, filing, and reporting under direct supervision.
  • Central Liaison: Serve as a central contact point for internal team queries, suppliers, and departmental correspondence.

2. Research, Data & Process Improvement

  • Market Research: Assist with basic market research, data collection, and operational analysis to support business decisions.
  • MS Office Reporting: Draft routine reports, process updates, and presentations using Microsoft Office tools.

3. Learning, Workshops & Mentorship

  • Professional Shadowing: Shadow experienced Transnet administrators and specialists to gain practical industry insights.
  • Training Attendance: Actively participate in assigned skill development workshops, team meetings, and structured mentorship sessions.

4. Compliance & Ethics

  • Policy Adherence: Follow Transnet safety regulations, operational policies, and corporate governance standards.
  • Confidentiality: Maintain strict confidentiality and ethical standards in handling administrative records.

Candidate Profile & Qualifications

To qualify for entry into this 18-month WIL traineeship, candidates must meet the following mandatory criteria:

  • Academic Qualification:
    • Grade 12 / Matric Certificate or equivalent.
    • Completed all theoretical subjects for N6 Certificate in Office Management (or related non-technical TVET qualification).
    • Must provide an official letter of confirmation / WIL request letter from your TVET institution (most recent).
  • Citizenship & Age: Must be a South African citizen aged between 18 and 35 years.
  • Bursary Status: Must NOT hold any existing bursary or contractual obligation with another company.
  • Required Documentation: Certified copies of Grade 12 Certificate, Full Academic Record (N4–N6), ID Document, and Institution Letter.
  • Core Competencies: Good written and verbal communication, basic computer literacy (MS Office), team orientation, attention to detail, and a strong willingness to learn.
  • Employment Equity: Preference will be given to candidates from designated groups in line with Transnet’s Employment Equity targets. Preference will be given to People with Disabilities (PWD).
  • Locations: Based in or able to commute daily to Durban, Pietermaritzburg, or Richards Bay.
