About Transnet & The WIL Non-Technical Programme

Transnet SOC Ltd is South Africa’s principal freight transport and logistics infrastructure enterprise, operating nationwide ports, rail lines, and liquid fuel pipelines.

The Transnet Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Non-Technical Trainee Programme is an 18-month structured practical exposure initiative designed for TVET college students and recent N6 graduates. Managed by the Transnet Corporate Centre, this programme provides hands-on administrative, HR, and marketing experience across regional offices in the Eastern Cape, Durban, and the Western Cape.

Key Responsibilities & Core Workstreams

During the 18-month traineeship, learners will contribute across four core operational streams:

1. Administrative & Departmental Operations

  • Operational Support: Perform routine operational tasks, document filing, and administrative reporting under supervision.
  • Communication Hub: Act as a central contact point for internal team queries, suppliers, and customer service requests.

2. Research, Analysis & MS Office Reporting

  • Market Research: Conduct data collection, basic market research, and analysis to support business operations.
  • Documentation: Prepare professional reports, process updates, and presentations using MS Office tools.

3. Professional Learning & Mentorship

  • Expert Shadowing: Shadow experienced Transnet administrators, HR specialists, and marketing officers.
  • Skills Development: Participate in structured workshops, training sessions, and continuous problem-solving exercises.

4. Governance & Ethics

  • Compliance: Follow Transnet safety rules, workplace policies, and professional ethics.
  • Data Integrity: Maintain strict confidentiality when handling company and employee documentation.

Candidate Profile & Qualifications

To qualify for entry into this 18-month WIL traineeship, candidates must meet the following mandatory criteria:

  • Academic Qualifications:
    • Grade 12 / Matric Certificate or equivalent.
    • Completed all theoretical subjects (N4 to N6) in one of the following fields:
      • Office Management
      • Human Resources
      • Marketing Management
    • Must provide a recent official letter of confirmation / WIL request from your TVET institution.
  • Citizenship & Age: Must be a South African citizen aged between 18 and 35 years.
  • Bursary Status: Must NOT hold any active bursary obligation with another organization.
  • Required Documentation: Certified copies of Grade 12 Certificate, N4–N6 Academic Transcripts, ID Document, and Institution Letter.
  • Core Competencies: Good written and verbal communication, basic computer skills (MS Office), team orientation, attention to detail, and a strong eagerness to learn.
  • Employment Equity: Preference will be given to candidates from designated groups in line with Transnet’s Employment Equity targets. Preference will be given to People with Disabilities (PWD).
  • Locations: Based in or able to work in Eastern Cape, Durban, or Western Cape.
