The Opportunity
This role is ideal for a junior technician looking to solidify their infrastructure knowledge. Working for a business-to-business IT provider means you will be responsible for maintaining hardware, troubleshooting network connectivity, and ensuring professional service delivery to various clients in the PMB region.
Minimum Requirements
- Certifications: Must hold both CompTIA A+ (Hardware/OS) and CompTIA N+ (Networking).
- Experience: Minimum of 6 months in a technical support role.
- Location: Candidates must be based in Pietermaritzburg.
- Advantage: Prior experience working for an MSP (Managed Service Provider) is a major bonus.
Required Attributes
- Reliability: Consistent attendance and follow-through on technical tickets.
- Communication: Professional verbal and written skills for client interaction.
- Willingness to Learn: A proactive approach to mastering new software and hardware environments.
Technical Interview Prep: The MSP Environment
In an MSP environment, you aren’t just fixing one company’s computers; you are managing many. Here is what to prepare for:
1. Networking Fundamentals (N+)
Expect questions on basic connectivity.
- Question: “A client says they can access internal files but cannot browse the internet. What is your first step?”
- Tip: Talk about checking the DNS settings and the Default Gateway.
2. Troubleshooting Hardware (A+)
- Question: “How do you handle a ‘Blue Screen of Death’ (BSOD) on a client’s laptop?”
- Tip: Mention checking the Error Code, reviewing recent driver updates, and testing the RAM/Hard Drive health.
3. Professionalism & Soft Skills
Since you represent the company at client sites, your “Interpersonal Skills” are just as important as your technical ones. Mention your ability to explain technical issues in “plain English” to non-technical users.
Career Advice for PMB IT Applicants
1. The “Local” Advantage
The employer has explicitly stated they will only consider PMB-based candidates. In your email/CV, make your residential address clear so they know you won’t have commuting issues.
2. Highlight your MSP exposure
If you have worked for an MSP before, emphasize your ability to use Ticketing Systems and your experience with different environments (e.g., Windows Server, Microsoft 365, or VOIP).
3. Certification Check
Ensure your A+ and N+ certificates are attached or easily verifiable. These are the “gatekeeper” requirements for this specific role.
