About Alstom & Bombela Maintenance

Alstom is a global leader in the sustainable transportation sector, engineering innovative solutions for greener and smarter mobility worldwide. The company develops and services a comprehensive range of equipment, from high-speed trains, metros, and trams to advanced signaling and digital mobility systems operating across 63 countries.

Bombela Maintenance, a dedicated subsidiary of Alstom, employs a high-performance team of 160 specialists in Midrand. This elite engineering unit works toward a single, uncompromised goal: delivering a safe, ultra-reliable Gautrain service on time, every time. By joining this team at the world-class Gautrain Maintenance Depot, you will gain hands-on industrial training at the cutting edge of modern rail infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities & Training Areas

Trainee Technicians will undergo structured technical development while directly supporting the production and maintenance engineering lines:

  • Preventative Maintenance: Assist qualified technicians with scheduled, proactive inspections and routine maintenance procedures to ensure train availability.
  • Corrective Maintenance: Provide hands-on backing during unexpected machinery breakdowns, rolling stock repairs, and component faults.
  • Safety & Quality Compliance: Maintain absolute adherence to railway safety regulations, workshop policies, and high-quality engineering rules at all times.
  • Industrial Administration: Learn and utilize IBM MAXIMO software for asset management, logging work orders, and tracking material usage.
  • Tooling & Inventory: Ensure the correct selection, safe handling, and meticulous preservation of advanced diagnostic materials, workshop tools, and precision equipment.
  • Shift Operations: Adapt to a rigorous rolling stock roster that includes scheduled night work, weekends, public holidays, and overtime demands.

Educational Qualifications & Experience

To satisfy the entry requirements for this specialized rail development track, applicants must possess:

  • Basic Education: Grade 12 / Matric certificate.
  • Technical Qualification: A completed S4 (University of Technology) or N6 (TVET College) National Certificate.
    • Note: This opening is specifically designed for candidates who have completed their theoretical coursework and are looking to fulfill or exclude their initial P1 and P2 practical training modules.
  • Industry Advantage: Prior operational exposure, holiday work, or foundational experience within a rail, manufacturing, or heavy production environment is highly advantageous.
  • Citizenship: Valid South African citizenship.

Vital Medical & Physical Requirements

Because depot environments involve high-voltage systems and moving rolling stock, candidates must conform to strict physical and safety compliance standards:

  • Physical Fitness: Must be physically fit, robust, and capable of handling physical workshop labor.
  • Working at Heights: Must have the full psychological and physical ability to perform tasks on elevated scaffolding and access platforms.
  • Visual Acuity: Must possess perfect color vision (ability to see in color) to safely trace electrical wiring and interpret rail signaling.
  • Hearing Health: Must pass standard hearing checks and be comfortable working in industrial environments with routine noise exposure.

Career Advice for Alstom Applicants

  1. Highlight Your S4/N6 Status: The screening team filters extensively for the theoretical foundation. Ensure your N6 or S4 specification is printed in large, bold text at the absolute top of your resume’s education segment.
  2. Emphasize Safety in Your Profile: Working around the Gautrain infrastructure leaves zero room for error. Use your CV profile summary to explicitly mention your commitment to occupational safety, hazard recognition, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  3. Be Clear About Shift Flexibility: Rail networks operate 24/7. If you have previous experience working part-time retail shifts, student night duties, or factory production rotations, feature it on your CV to prove you have the resilience for a transport maintenance roster.

Sample Interview Preparation Questions

Technical & Workshop Safety Questions

  • Question (Safety & Compliance): “The Gautrain maintenance depot contains live high-voltage lines and heavy moving components. If you notice a teammate utilizing an uninspected power tool or omitting standard PPE, how would you address it?”
  • Question (Systems & Maintenance): “Trainees at Alstom utilize Maximo software to track assets and log repair updates. Why is meticulous data tracking and accurate administrative logging just as important as the physical turning of spanners on a train?”

Behavioral & Roster Resilience Questions

  • Question (Shift Work Adaptability): “This role operates on a demanding maintenance schedule that includes night shifts, public holidays, and weekend overtime. How do you plan to manage your rest and maintain peak mental alertness during irregular working hours?”
  • Question (Applied Technical Learning): “Can you describe a challenging technical project or workshop task from your N6/S4 studies where a piece of equipment failed to operate as expected? Walk us through how you logically analyzed the problem.”
