About PEP & The People Solutions Vision
PEP is a powerhouse brand within South Africa’s retail sector, universally recognized as the continent’s largest single-brand retailer. Driven by a high-energy corporate philosophy known as Sikhula KunYe (a proud Xhosa phrase meaning “We Grow Together”), PEP values friendliness, mutual respect, and internal talent development above all else.
Rather than deploying a traditional, cold Human Resources department, PEP utilizes a specialized People Solutions framework. This Trainee Regional People Solutions Partner role is an advanced management-track path. Based out of Centurion, it is designed to polish an experienced HR generalist into a high-impact regional strategist capable of aligning workforce capability directly with retail profit metrics.
Strategic Dimensions & Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will master and deploy PEP’s national people strategy across their designated regional retail footprint:
- Recruitment & Selection: Source, screen, and place high-performing store managers and retail personnel to optimize regional workforce performance.
- Industrial Relations (IR): Manage dispute resolutions, coordinate disciplinary hearings, and maintain fair, legally compliant labor practices across branches.
- Culture Preservation: Actively champion and embed the unique Sikhula KunYe corporate culture across all localized teams to drive morale and retention.
- Personnel Administration & Policies: Oversee strict compliance audits regarding internal personnel policies, leave tracking, and labor law routines.
- Succession Planning & Talent Pipelines: Map out regional skills gaps, identify high-potential floor staff, and build robust internal talent benches.
- Learning & Development: Coordinate training initiatives, facilitate management coaching, and drive compliance with retail operational standards.
- Operational Line Support: Act as a strategic advisor to regional line management, helping them solve human capital bottlenecks proactively.
Candidate Requirements & Compliance Criteria
To satisfy the rigorous vetting filters for this permanent retail management track, applicants must possess:
- Education: Grade 12 / Matric combined with a completed, recognized Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resource Management (or a closely related human capital discipline).
- Core Experience: Minimum of 5 years of operational experience within a Generalist HR role.
- Industry Advantage: Prior operational knowledge and HR experience within a fast-paced retail or FMCG environment is highly advantageous.
- Mobility Stack: A valid Code 8 manual driver’s license alongside an absolute willingness to undertake extensive, regular regional travel to retail stores.
- Digital Tools: High proficiency in Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms) for real-time, cloud-based data collaboration.
Vital Technical & Behavioral Competencies
- Logical Reasoning & Negotiation: The distinct capacity to influence corporate decision-makers, handle complex labor union interactions, and resolve structural conflicts.
- Business Acumen: A clear understanding of how human resource metrics (like staff turnover or absenteeism) directly impact store profitability and operational overheads.
- Resilience & Routine: The proven emotional stability to perform excellently under high pressure, navigating set compliance routines according to strict work methods.
Career Advice for PEP Applicants
- Clarify the Experience Level: Don’t let the word “Trainee” confuse you. PEP is specifically filtering for candidates with at least 5 years of generalist HR experience. Ensure your resume’s chronological work history section prominently features your years of experience right at the top so the screening team can instantly verify your eligibility.
- Deconstruct Your Retail/FMCG Wins: If you have worked in retail before, make it count. Quantify your achievements in your CV bullets: “Managed IR and disciplinary compliance for 12 retail branches, reducing regional dispute escalations by 20% over 2 years.”
- Specify Your Driver’s License Type: Because extensive travel is a core requirement of a regional role, applications without clear mobility metrics are frequently discarded. Explicitly state “Valid Manual Code 8 Driver’s License” in your personal summary block.
Sample Interview Preparation Questions
Strategic HR & Retail Operations Questions
- Question (Sikhula KunYe Integration): “PEP’s culture is anchored heavily in Sikhula KunYe (We Grow Together). How would you practically balance the compassionate, human-centric nature of this culture with the harsh financial realities of turning around an underperforming retail store?”
- Question (High-Volume Industrial Relations): “With a regional footprint, you will be handling multiple employee relations cases simultaneously across different towns. Walk us through your system for tracking IR documentation, keeping case files audit-ready, and ensuring zero legal slips.”
Behavioral & Leadership Influence Questions
- Question (Influencing Line Management): “Store managers are heavily focused on daily sales targets and foot traffic. How do you approach an aggressive or busy branch manager to convince them to dedicate operational hours to employee training and structured succession planning?”
- Question (Travel & Pressure Resiliency): “This role requires operating inside rigid compliance routines while constantly traveling regionally under tight deadlines. Can you describe a period in your career where you managed extensive travel commitments without letting your administrative outputs suffer?”
