Career Advice for TEFLA Applicants

  1. Province-Specific Targeting: When you apply, clearly state which province (GP, KZN, WC, or LP) you are applying for in your subject line. This makes the HR team’s job easier and shows you are organized.
  2. Highlight Site Experience: If you did any “vacation work” or site visits during your studies, emphasize this. In construction, showing you aren’t afraid to put on a hard hat and boots is a major plus.
  3. The CETA Advantage: Since this is a CETA-backed programme, focus on your desire for Professional Registration. Mention that you are eager to start logging your hours toward becoming a Professional Technician or Surveyor.

Possible Interview Questions

Technical & Industry

  • “How do you handle the pressure of strict deadlines on a construction site?”
  • “Which software are you most comfortable with? (e.g., AutoCAD, WinQS, MS Project, or CCS Candy?)”
  • “What is the most important safety protocol you learned during your engineering/QS studies?”

Situational

  • “If you notice a discrepancy between the architectural drawings and what is actually being built on-site, what is your first step?”
  • “Construction projects often involve diverse teams. How do you communicate technical info to someone who isn’t an engineer?”
