Road Worker (7 Posts) | Limpopo Dept. of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure

The Limpopo Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure (DPWRI) is officially recruiting for seven (7) Road Worker positions across the province. These roles are essential for the maintenance and expansion of Limpopo’s transport network, ensuring that provincial roads remain safe, accessible, and durable.

This is a permanent government opportunity for physically active individuals who have specialized training in road construction and maintenance.

The Role: Infrastructure Maintenance

Road workers are the frontline of provincial infrastructure. You will be responsible for the physical upkeep of the road surface, drainage systems, and road verges. This work is critical for preventing road degradation and ensuring the safety of thousands of daily commuters.

Key Responsibilities

  • Pavement Maintenance: Patching potholes, sealing cracks, and repairing damaged road surfaces using asphalt or cold-mix.
  • Drainage Management: Cleaning and maintaining culverts, side drains, and catchpits to prevent water damage to the road structure.
  • Road Safety Installation: Assisting in the installation and repair of road signs, guardrails, and cat-eyes.
  • Verge Maintenance: Controlling vegetation growth on road shoulders and clearing debris to ensure visibility for drivers.
  • Equipment Operation: Safely operating hand tools and light machinery required for road repairs.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: NQF Level 4 Qualification (Grade 12 or equivalent) in Road Construction, Road Maintenance, or a related technical discipline.
  • Attributes: Must be physically fit and able to perform manual labor in various weather conditions.
  • Salary: R163,680 per annum (Level 3).
  • Location: Various districts within Limpopo Province.

Interview Prep: Possible Questions

  • “Why is water management (drainage) considered the most important part of road maintenance?”
    • Tip: “Water is the biggest enemy of a road. If water sits on the surface or gets into the foundation, it creates potholes and weakens the road structure. Proper drainage ensures the road remains dry and durable.”
  • “How do you ensure your safety and the safety of the public while working on a busy provincial road?”
    • Tip: “Safety starts with visibility. I ensure that all warning signs and traffic cones are placed at the correct distances according to the safety manual, and I always wear the required high-visibility Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).”
  • “Tell us about your experience with road construction materials like bitumen or cold-mix.”
    • Tip: Discuss your specific NQF Level 4 training—mentioning how you prepare a surface before patching and the importance of proper compaction to ensure the patch doesn’t fail.

Career Advice for DPWRI Applicants

  1. Z83 Form Accuracy: As this is a government position, you must submit a completed and signed New Z83 Form. Ensure the reference numbers for the specific district you are applying for are correct.
  2. Physical Readiness: During the selection process, be prepared for a practical or physical assessment. Highlighting any prior experience in heavy labor or construction on your CV will be an advantage.
  3. Local Knowledge: Limpopo has a vast network of both paved and gravel roads. Mention your familiarity with the specific district you are applying for, as local knowledge of road conditions is highly valued.
  4. Certification: Ensure your NQF Level 4 certificate is clearly certified and attached. If your qualification is from a TVET college or a specialized training center, include your academic record.
