As a Junior Systems Administrator, you will join an agile IT infrastructure team delivering end-to-end technical support across multi-site client environments in the Johannesburg region. This role is ideal for an ambitious, hands-on tech enthusiast looking to manage server environments, user active directories, network security, hardware deployments, and cloud infrastructure while receiving direct guidance from senior systems engineers.

Key Responsibilities & Daily Technical Deliverables

In this systems administration role, your daily operational workstreams will cover four core IT pillars:

1. Server & System Administration

  • User Management: Provision, update, and manage user accounts, group policies, access permissions, and security credentials within Microsoft Active Directory and Microsoft 365 / Entra ID.
  • System Maintenance: Perform routine server health checks, operating system updates, security patches, and automated data backups.

2. Network & Hardware Operations

  • Infrastructure Support: Assist in monitoring local networks (LAN/WAN), routers, switches, firewalls, and Wi-Fi access points across client sites.
  • Hardware Deployment: Setup, configure, deploy, and troubleshoot desktop workstations, laptops, peripheral devices, and system images.

3. Desktop Support & Ticket Resolution

  • Helpdesk Operations: Act as an escalation point for Tier 2 technical desktop, software, and hardware queries logged through the IT ticketing system.
  • On-Site Client Visits: Travel to local client premises in the Johannesburg area to resolve infrastructure issues and perform site installations.

4. Technical Documentation & Security Compliance

  • Documentation: Maintain up-to-date IT documentation, network diagrams, device inventories, and system configuration logs.

Candidate Profile & Technical Requirements

To qualify for this junior systems administrator opportunity, candidates should meet the following criteria:

  • Academic Qualification: Completed Qualification in Information Technology, Computer Science, System Administration, or Network Engineering (Diploma, Degree, or accredited certifications).
  • Industry Certifications (Advantageous):
    • CompTIA A+ / Network+ / Security+
    • Microsoft Certified: Azure Fundamentals / Modern Desktop Administrator
    • Cisco CCNA
  • Core Technical Skills:
    • Working knowledge of Windows Server OS, Active Directory, and Microsoft 365 Administration.
    • Basic understanding of networking protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPNs, Routers, Switches).
    • Familiarity with system backup solutions, antivirus software, and firewall management.
  • Driver’s License & Mobility: Valid South African driver’s license (and own reliable vehicle preferred for client site support).
