Life Healthcare is one of the largest private hospital groups in South Africa, operating a massive network of hospitals and specialized care centers. The Life Nkanyisa division is specifically dedicated to providing long-term, public-private partnership healthcare services, focusing on vulnerable patients. In an HR role here, you aren’t just managing files; you are supporting the staff who provide life-saving care. Life Healthcare is a JSE-listed company, meaning you will be trained in a corporate environment that follows world-class HR governance and compliance standards.
Internship Scope
During this 12-month program, you will be mentored by senior HR Business Partners. Your daily involvement will include:

- Employee Relations: Observing disciplinary hearings, managing leave records, and learning the practical application of the Labour Relations Act.
- Training & Development: Coordinating staff workshops and ensuring that all nursing staff meet their mandatory CPD (Continuing Professional Development) requirements.
- Compliance & Audit: Assisting with the maintenance of personnel files to ensure they meet the strict Department of Health and OHSC (Office of Health Standards Compliance) standards.
Career Advice: Applying to a Healthcare Group
- NQF Level 7 Requirement: Note that this is a Graduate internship, not a TVET one. You must have a completed Degree (BCom or BA in HR) or an Advanced Diploma. Ensure your academic transcript is included in your PDF application.
- SABPP Registration: While not always mandatory, mentioning that you are an aspiring member of the South African Board for People Practices (SABPP) shows that you take your professional ethics seriously.
- The “Nkanyisa” Nuance: Because this facility focuses on mental health and specialized care, highlight your empathy and emotional intelligence. HR in a care center requires a high level of sensitivity when dealing with staff who work in high-stress environments.
- POPIA Compliance: Healthcare HR deals with highly sensitive personal data. In your interview, mention your understanding of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).
Possible Interview Questions
“Why did you choose Human Resources as a career, and why specifically in a healthcare environment?” Avoid generic answers. Talk about how HR is the “heart” of the organization—by taking care of the employees (nurses, doctors, cleaners), you are indirectly ensuring the patients receive the best care.
“How would you handle a situation where you discover a personnel file is missing a mandatory nursing certificate?” This is a test of your attention to detail and compliance. Explain that you would immediately flag the discrepancy to your supervisor, as missing documentation can lead to legal risks for the hospital.
“What is your understanding of the Employment Equity Act and its role at Life Healthcare?” Mention that as a large South African employer, Life Healthcare is committed to transformation. Explain that you understand the importance of diverse hiring to reflect the community the hospital serves.
“In HR, you often deal with confidential information. How do you ensure that private employee details stay private?” Explain your commitment to professional ethics—only sharing information with authorized personnel and ensuring that your desk and digital files are always secure and password-protected.
