About RATP Dev & The Engineering Maintenance Team
RATP Dev is a global public transit leader operating high-capacity mobility and rail networks across 10 countries—most notably operating and maintaining South Africa’s premier high-speed rail network, the Gautrain. Ensuring world-class passenger safety, speed, and train punctuality relies entirely on continuous engineering maintenance and preventative infrastructure inspections.
Operating out of the central Midrand depot, the Maintenance & Engineering Division is opening four Graduate Intern vacancies across civil, mechanical, electrical, and systems disciplines. This 12 to 24-month structured program provides recent engineering graduates with immersive, practical field exposure under the direct supervision of senior rail maintenance managers.
Key Responsibilities & Field Exposure
Under technical supervision, the Graduate Engineering Interns will contribute to five core maintenance operational areas:
1. Multi-Disciplinary Infrastructure Inspections
- Asset Audits: Support structured inspections of railway tracks, civil structures, building infrastructure, electrical lines, and mechanical/electronic subsystems.
- Shift Rotations: Participate in critical night shift inspections and track possessions to inspect infrastructure during non-operational rail windows.
2. Technical Troubleshooting & Fault Finding
- Root Cause Analysis: Assist maintenance technicians with fault-finding, system diagnostic checks, and troubleshooting equipment failures.
- Preventative Work: Help carry out routine scheduled maintenance tasks to ensure compliance with strict safety standards.
3. Data Logging & Maintenance Records
- Record Keeping: Capture real-time maintenance data, update asset management logs, and assist with technical reporting.
- Documentation: Ensure all completed job cards and safety checklists are accurately documented.
4. Safety, Compliance & Site Governance
- Toolbox Talks: Actively participate in daily safety briefings, hazard identifications, and toolbox talks before entering rail corridors.
- Standards Compliance: Strictly follow company health, safety, environment, and quality (HSEQ) guidelines, including safety protocols for working at heights.
5. Operational Support
- Special Projects: Perform technical support tasks, inventory checks, and continuous improvement activities assigned by Maintenance Managers.
Candidate Profile & Minimum Entry Requirements
To qualify for this engineering graduate intake, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Academic Qualification: A completed National Diploma, Higher Diploma, or Bachelor’s Degree (BTech/BSc/BEng) in:
- Civil Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering (or a closely related engineering discipline)
- Experience Level: No previous work experience required (Recent graduates who completed their qualification within the last 1–2 years are strongly encouraged to apply).
- Licence: Must hold a valid driver’s licence with active driving experience.
- Physical & Environmental Readiness: Ability to work at heights, perform physical site walks along rail corridors, and adapt to working flexible shifts (including night shifts).
- Technical Baseline: Solid computer literacy (MS Office suite) and a strong understanding of core engineering principles.
- Language Proficiency: Fluent in written and spoken English.
