Valterra Platinum (formerly Anglo American Platinum) is the world’s leading primary producer of Platinum Group Metals (PGMs), operating integrated mining, smelting, and refining facilities across Southern Africa.

Valterra Platinum is inviting applications for their 18.2 Unemployed Engineering Learnership Programme at the Mortimer Smelter. Designed to equip young South Africans with practical technical capabilities, this structured training programme combines off-the-job institutional learning with hands-on workplace training. Upon successful completion, learners will qualify for a nationally recognized Trade Test / Artisan Qualification in their respective trade discipline.

Trade Disciplines & Subject Entry Requirements

Applicants must meet ONE of the following three entry qualification options:

Option A: Matric / Technical Matric Entry

• Matric / Technical Matric with minimum 40% passes in:
  • Mathematics (Pure Maths only — Mathematical Literacy is NOT accepted)
  • Physical Science
  • English

Option B: N2 / Technical College Entry

• N2 Certificate or higher with all trade-specific subjects passed as outlined below:
  • Boilermaker Trade: Plating & Structural Steelwork (or Welder’s Theory), Plating & Structural Steelwork Drawings, Mathematics, and Engineering Science.
  • Mechanical Fitter Trade: Fitting Trade Theory (or Mechanotechnology / Mechanotechnics), Engineering Drawings / Draughting, Mathematics, and Engineering Science.
  • Instrument Mechanician Trade: Instrument Trade Theory (or Industrial Instruments), Industrial Electronics, Mathematics, and Engineering Science.
  • Rigger Trade: Rigging Trade Theory, Engineering Drawings / Draughting, Mathematics, and Engineering Science.

Option C: NCV Level 4 Entry

• NCV Level 4 Certificate in an appropriate trade discipline with all subjects passed with a minimum 40% pass mark.
