About the Role & Firm
A boutique law firm comprising two sole legal practitioners in association, located in Faerie Glen, Pretoria East, is seeking a highly skilled, independent Senior Litigation Assistant / Paralegal to serve as the operational anchor of the practice.
This role requires a seasoned legal professional with deep expertise in High Court and Magistrate’s Court civil litigation processes. The ideal candidate will take total ownership of legal typing, court diary management, CaseLines and CourtOnline submissions, bundle compilation, and practice administration, operating seamlessly without constant supervision.
Key Responsibilities & Daily Practice Management
The Senior Litigation Assistant / Paralegal will execute duties across five core operational areas:
1. High Court & Magistrate’s Court Litigation Typing
- Document Drafting: Compile, draft, and type general and civil litigation court documents, pleadings, notices, affidavits, and legal correspondence.
- Court Bundle Preparation: Index, paginate, bind, and organize complex court bundles for trials, motions, and hearings.
2. E-Filing & Digital Court Operations
- Court Portals: Proficiently manage, file, and track proceedings using CaseLines and CourtOnline.
- Court Timeline & Diary Management: Calculate strict court day timelines (dies non, court rules), manage indices, maintain the firm’s master legal diary, and ensure zero missed court deadlines.
3. Risk Mitigation & Legal Communication
- Legal Risk Oversight: Exercise professional caution when acknowledging emails and written communication to ensure no accidental admission of liability or compromise of client interest occurs.
- Stakeholder Liaison: Act as the primary liaison between the practice, clients, Advocates, Sheriff offices, and Registrar personnel.
4. Practice Administration & Billing Support
- Legal Invoicing: Prepare and draft client invoices, track billable hours, and follow up on outstanding fee payments.
- Operational Anchor: Perform comprehensive secretarial, administrative, and PA duties for two senior legal practitioners.
Candidate Profile & Minimum Entry Requirements
To qualify for consideration for Reference CR2882, applicants must meet the following mandatory criteria:
- Educational Qualifications:
- Completed Matric / Grade 12 (Essential).
- Legal qualification or Paralegal Diploma (Advantageous).
- Work Experience & History:
- Minimum of 5 years recent experience performing High Court and Magistrate’s Court litigation typing at a law firm at a Senior level (Mandatory).
- Stable employment record with contactable employment references (Mandatory).
- Technical & Court Software Proficiency:
- Hands-on experience and proficiency in CaseLines and CourtOnline systems (Mandatory).
- Deep understanding of litigation rules, calculating court day timelines, indexing, and paginating.
- High typing speed and accuracy (Essential).
- Location, Mobility & Vetting:
- Must reside in Pretoria (preferably in Pretoria East / Faerie Glen area) (Essential).
- Valid driver’s licence and own reliable transport (Essential).
- Fully bilingual with exceptional written and verbal English communication skills.
- Strong understanding of legal risk in professional written communications.
