Security Technician role at Strategic Response Unit (SRU)

Strategic Response Unit (SRU) is a premier South African security provider specializing in tactical armed reaction, off-site monitoring, and advanced security system installations. With a strong presence in Gauteng and North West, SRU is more than just a guarding company; they provide high-level tactical support and recovery services. Their technical team is the “engine room” that keeps their rapid response infrastructure connected, ensuring that every alarm and camera feed is operational when it matters most.

Job Description

As a Security Technician at SRU, you are responsible for the full lifecycle of security hardware. Your role involves installing, maintaining, and performing deep fault-finding on a variety of systems including alarms, CCTV, and access control. You will be the face of the company on-site, interacting with clients during system handovers and ensuring all work meets the company’s high compliance and professional standards. This is a mobile role that requires a disciplined individual capable of meeting deadlines across Pretoria and Hartbeespoort.

Career Advice: The “Technical Edge”

  1. PSIRA is King: Ensure your PSIRA registration is not only valid but that you have your digital or physical card ready. SRU cannot legally deploy you to sites without it.
  2. The “Fault-Finding” Focus: In your CV, don’t just say you “install alarms.” Mention specific brands you are proficient in (e.g., DSC, IDS, Paradox, or Hikvision). Describe a time you solved a complex intermittent fault—this is what sets senior technicians apart.
  3. Professionalism & Gear: As a technician, your vehicle and tools are your office. Mentioning that you take pride in a tidy “Own Reliable Transport” and organized tool kit signals the “disciplined” nature SRU is looking for.
  4. Client Handovers: A technician’s job isn’t done until the client knows how to use the system. Highlight your ability to explain technical features to non-technical users in simple, professional terms.

Possible Interview Questions

“Walk us through your process for identifying a ‘False Alarm’ fault on a customer’s perimeter beam.” The goal here is to see your logical troubleshooting path. Talk about checking for environmental factors (overhanging branches), checking voltage at the sensor, inspecting the wiring for weather damage, and testing the alignment.

“How do you prioritize your day when you have three urgent maintenance calls in Pretoria but you are currently finishing an installation in Hartbeespoort?” SRU values the ability to work under pressure. Explain how you communicate with the dispatcher/control room to manage client expectations and how you ensure the quality of your current job isn’t compromised by the rush to the next one.

“What is your experience with IP-based CCTV versus traditional Analog systems?” As technology shifts, SRU likely uses a lot of IP cameras. Be ready to discuss your basic networking knowledge, such as setting up IP addresses, using PoE switches, and configuring NVRs for remote viewing on mobile apps.

“Why is professional conduct so important when you are on-site at a client’s private residence or business?” You represent the “Strategic Response” brand. Explain that your behavior, appearance, and communication are what build the client’s trust in the security of their property.
