This structured internship provides a foundational platform for early-career accounting professionals to build real-world capability under the mentorship of executive corporate accountants.

Key Responsibilities & Functional Actions

As an Intern Junior Accountant, you will support the core finance lifecycle, ensuring the integrity of financial processing, administrative reporting, and budgeting support:

  • Month-End Processing: Deliver accurate month-end financial processing, including expense accounting, processing provisions, and standard monthly closure routines.
  • Reconciliations: Execute detailed balance sheet and intercompany accounts reconciliations, identifying variances and resolving discrepancies timeously.
  • Audit Readiness: Support internal financial controls, contributing to ongoing audit readiness and ensuring full compliance with national accounting standards.
  • Stakeholder Relations: Resolve everyday finance-related queries from internal business partners, enabling clear data flow and operational efficiency across teams.
  • Budget & Admin Support: Assist with routine budgeting activities, financial administration tasks, and expenditure tracking.
  • System Testing: Contribute to active finance projects and system enhancements, assisting senior teams with testing and implementation schedules.

Qualifications, Experience & Core Skills

To stand out for this entry-tier financial role, candidates must demonstrate the following credentials:

  • Education: A completed Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Financial Management, or an equivalent commerce qualification.
  • Experience: Approximately 1 year of exposure or early-career experience within a formal accounting or corporate finance workspace.
  • Tech Stack Proficiency: Basic to intermediate spreadsheet capability in MS Excel (reconciliations, sorting data, basic formulas) to handle tracking and analysis tasks.
  • System Familiarity: Prior exposure navigating standard enterprise resource planning (ERP) financial software such as SAP or Sage is highly advantageous.
  • Core Aptitude: A strong foundational grasp of fundamental accounting principles, ledger entries, and double-entry book balancing.
  • Attributes: Analytical problem-solving skills, high attention to detail, strong organizational capacity, and a proactive learning mindset.

Career Advice for Vitality Applicants

  1. Highlight Your ERP & Excel Skills: Modern corporate finance teams prioritize tech-literate graduates. Ensure your experience with specific software systems (like SAP or Sage) and intermediate Excel functionalities (e.g., VLOOKUPs, Pivot Tables) are explicitly called out in your CV’s technical skills matrix.
  2. Quantify Academic or Work Scale: If you have 6 to 12 months of experience, define the volume of your work. Instead of saying “handled bank reconciliations,” say “managed monthly balance sheet and intercompany reconciliations for multiple internal operating units.”
  3. Employment Equity Alignment: Vitality actively operates under an approved Employment Equity Plan. Eligible candidates—including designated groups and individuals living with disabilities—are highly encouraged to highlight their status during profile registration to ensure accurate tracking.

Sample Interview Preparation Questions

Technical & Ledger Aptitude Questions

  • Question (Reconciliations & Variance): “During a month-end intercompany reconciliation process, you spot a significant balance discrepancy between two internal accounts. What logical steps do you take to investigate, track down the error, and correct it?”
  • Question (Excel & Systems Application): “We handle large financial datasets at Vitality. Can you describe an instance where you utilized intermediate Excel formulas or an ERP system (like SAP or Sage) to speed up an accounting or administrative process?”

Behavioral & Professional Attributes Questions

  • Question (Prioritizing under Pressure): “Month-end is notoriously busy for finance teams, and unexpected requests from business partners often crop up. How do you manage your time and prioritize tasks when faced with conflicting deadlines?”
  • Question (Learning Agility): “As an intern, you will be exposed to complex internal financial structures and ongoing system enhancements. Tell us about a time you had to learn a new corporate software platform or system quickly. How did you handle the learning curve?”
