About Pepkor IT & The Graduate Web Developer Role
Pepkor IT powers the retail technology, e-commerce platforms, and fintech solutions for South Africa’s largest retail networks (including PEP, Ackermans, Dunns, and Tekkie Town).
The Graduate Web Developer program within the Customer and Fintech (E-commerce) department is designed to build enterprise-grade software developers from the ground up. This 12-month hybrid contract combines intensive technical training—including full Shopify store development training—with real-world project delivery across high-volume South African e-commerce platforms.
Key Responsibilities & Learning Modules
During this 12-month development journey, the graduate will focus on four core technical pillars:
1. Front-End & E-commerce Software Engineering
- Shopify Ecosystem: Undergo comprehensive, ground-up training on Shopify theme development, Liquid templating, app integrations, and store customizations.
- Web Development: Build and maintain high-performing, responsive web interfaces using modern HTML5, CSS3/SASS, and JavaScript (ES6+).
2. Enterprise Codebase & Version Control
- Version Control: Utilize Git workflows (branching, pull requests, code reviews) within an enterprise development pipeline.
- Real-World Shipping: Collaborate on production codebases supporting high-traffic retail and fintech platforms.
3. Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Agile Teams: Work alongside senior software engineers, UX/UI designers, and e-commerce product managers to deliver user-centric online shopping experiences.
- Testing & Optimization: Participate in web performance tuning, cross-browser compatibility testing, and mobile responsiveness optimizations.
Candidate Profile & Qualifications
To qualify for entry into this graduate program, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Academic Qualifications: Completed Diploma, BSc, or BTech Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or equivalent qualification.
- Core Technical Skills:
- Solid foundational knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
- Familiarity with version control using Git / GitHub / GitLab.
- Interest in e-commerce, front-end frameworks, and modern web platforms.
- Mindset & Work Style: Proactive mindset, eager to learn new technologies (Shopify), and strong problem-solving skills.
- Work Arrangement: Ability to work in a Hybrid model, commuting to the Pepkor offices in Bellville, Cape Town.
