The Graduate Intern: Data Analytics position is hosted within the executive Group Insights and Analytics department at the PPS head office in Parktown, Johannesburg. This technical graduate programme focuses on end-to-end data engineering, analytics data warehousing, SQL query optimization, and Power BI dashboard development. Interns will work directly alongside senior data architects and business intelligence leads to ingest, clean, and analyze enterprise datasets to drive executive decision-making.
Key Responsibilities & Core Workstreams
In this data analytics and engineering role, your daily operational deliverables will cover five primary technical pillars:
1. Data Warehouse & Pipeline Maintenance
- Pipeline Management: Maintain, monitor, and optimize the Analytics Data Warehouse and automated ETL data pipeline environments.
- Data Lake Integration: Collaborate with core IT teams to source, ingest, and load multi-departmental data into the central Data Lake for advanced analytics.
2. Data Engineering & Tool Development
- Dataset Assembly: Assemble large, complex datasets designed to meet both functional business needs and non-functional system performance requirements.
- Data Science Tooling: Build data pipeline utilities and data structures for internal analytics and data science teams to optimize insurance products.
3. Data Governance & Security
- Quality & Security: Enforce data governance frameworks, ensuring high data accuracy, accessibility, master data management (MDM), and data security standards.
- Stakeholder Contracting: Engage with cross-functional business stakeholders to audit current data practices and establish data ownership contracts.
4. Automated Reporting & Business Intelligence
- Dashboard Development: Design and deploy automated reporting solutions and Power BI dashboards that deliver actionable insights into customer behavior, operational performance, and corporate KPIs.
5. Business Process Enhancement
- Strategy & Optimization: Research and recommend data-driven process improvements, proposing effective strategies to enhance operational value across PPS.
Candidate Profile & Technical Requirements
To qualify for entry into this Graduate Internship, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Academic Qualifications:
- BSc in Information Technology (Data Engineering focus), Computer Science, Information Systems, or a closely related quantitative field.
- Preferred: Postgraduate degree (Honours / Master’s) in IT, Data Engineering, or Data Analytics.
- Technical Stack Exposure:
- SQL Mastery: Strong proficiency in SQL database querying, database structures, and query optimization.
- Data Visualization: Hands-on working familiarity with visualization engines, specifically Microsoft Power BI.
