The Assistant Systems Administrator Graduate position is hosted within Mimecast’s Customer Automation, Systems & AI (CASA) team in Johannesburg. Working under the direct mentorship of a Senior Systems Administrator, this entry-level role focuses on managing, automating, and maintaining business-critical technical platforms—including enterprise ticketing systems (Zendesk), telephony, knowledge bases, SIEM log analysis tools (Splunk, Sumo Logic), and lab environments.
Key Responsibilities & Core Workstreams
In this systems administration and automation role, your daily operational deliverables will cover four primary technical pillars:
1. Enterprise Systems Support & First-Line Escalation
- Platform Monitoring: Assist in monitoring, maintaining, and managing core enterprise tools across Global Technical Services.
- Troubleshooting: Serve as the first-line escalation contact for system anomalies, resolving initial issues and escalating complex bugs to senior leads.
- Access Control: Support user access provisioning, role reviews, and permission maintenance to uphold strict cybersecurity compliance.
2. Automation & Scripting
- Scripting Workflows: Learn to write and maintain automation scripts using PowerShell, Python, or Bash to eliminate repetitive manual system tasks.
- Helpdesk Infrastructure: Administer and configure enterprise ticketing engines (such as Zendesk) to optimize global support queues.
3. Log Analysis, Testing & Quality Assurance
- Log Management: Gain hands-on exposure to SIEM and log analysis platforms (e.g., Splunk, Sumo Logic) to isolate operational issues.
- UAT Testing: Participate in User Acceptance Testing (UAT) when new automation tools, AI systems, or platform updates are deployed.
4. Reporting, AI & Documentation
- System Analytics: Generate performance dashboards and system health reports to identify operational bottlenecks.
- Knowledge Base Management: Maintain organized technical documentation and internal KB articles.
Candidate Profile & Technical Requirements
To qualify for entry into this Graduate Programme, candidates should meet the following criteria:
- Academic Qualification: Recent degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field (or equivalent practical projects).
- Scripting Exposure: Basic exposure to scripting languages (Python, PowerShell, or Bash) from coursework, personal projects, or internships.
- Foundational Knowledge: Solid grasp of core IT concepts, operating systems, networking basics, and cloud infrastructure.
- AI Curiosity: Interest or exposure to generative AI tools, automation bots, or LLM integrations.
- Desirable / Bonus Points (Not Strictly Required):
- Familiarity with helpdesk ticketing engines (Zendesk).
