Career Advice: The Helpdesk “Success” Formula

  1. Focus on the SLA: CapeNature explicitly mentions a 90% resolution rate. In your interview, describe how you prioritize tasks to ensure urgent issues are resolved quickly without letting smaller requests fall through the cracks.
  2. Security-First Mindset: Modern IT support is as much about security as it is about fixing hardware. Emphasize your understanding of security patches and the importance of deactivating accounts immediately when a user leaves.
  3. Technical vs. Non-Technical: You will be speaking to scientists, field rangers, and admin staff. Show that you can explain a “VPN issue” or “system update” in simple terms without using too much jargon.

Possible Interview Questions

Technical & Process

  • “A user cannot connect to the VPN from a remote site. Walk us through your troubleshooting steps.”
  • “How do you handle a situation where you have multiple ‘High Priority’ tickets but only enough time to resolve one immediately?”

Security & Administration

  • “Why is maintaining an accurate hardware asset register critical for ICT governance?”
