Company Profile: Momentum Metropolitan
Momentum Metropolitan is a JSE-listed financial services group. Momentum Insure, specifically, focuses on protecting what matters to clients through short-term insurance solutions. Working here means being part of a massive network that includes brands like Metropolitan, Multiply, and Guardrisk. They are known for a culture of “Human-Centricity” and financial wellness.
The Role: Legal Intern
This is a structured work-based program where you will be integrated into the Operations Cluster. Unlike a traditional law firm where you might focus only on litigation, this role allows you to be part of the full employee and business lifecycle, exposing you to corporate governance, compliance, and legal administration.
Key Responsibilities
- Legal Administration: Assist in the drafting, reviewing, and filing of legal documents and contracts.
- Compliance Support: Help ensure the business adheres to the latest insurance industry regulations and Employment Equity plans.
- Employee Lifecycle: Participate in legal activities related to human resources and internal corporate operations.
- Research: Conduct legal research on evolving South African laws affecting the financial services sector.
- Reporting: Assist with the preparation of quality work outputs and reports for the legal team.
Minimum Requirements
- Education: Recently completed LLB, or a relevant Legal/Compliance Degree.
- Age: Between 18 and 25 years old.
- Status: Currently unemployed with a clean criminal and credit record.
- Tech Skills: Proficiency in MS Office (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word).
The Corporate Legal Mindset
Transitioning from a law library to a corporate office requires a shift in how you process information.
1. Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM)
In a company like Momentum, contracts are the foundation of everything.
- Interview Tip: Be ready to discuss the importance of version control and clause libraries. If a senior legal counsel asks how you handle multiple edits on a document, emphasize your attention to detail and organization.
2. Compliance and Governance
Insurance is one of the most regulated industries in South Africa (e.g., FSR Act, POPIA).
- Concept: You will likely assist the “Second Line of Defense.” Your job is to help monitor risks and ensure the “rules” are followed before they become “problems.”
Career Advice: Standing Out at Momentum
1. Master the “Plain Language” Law
In the insurance world, the law must be accessible to the client. Practice taking a complex legal clause and explaining it in a way that a non-lawyer can understand. This is a highly valued skill in corporate legal departments.
2. Networking in Centurion
Momentum has a massive campus in Centurion. Don’t eat lunch at your desk every day. Once you are settled, try to meet people in the Actuarial or Claims departments. Understanding how the “business” side works will make you a much better legal advisor.
3. The 12-Month “Audition”
Treat this internship as a year-long interview. Because this initiative forms part of their Employment Equity plan, showing high initiative and “solution-oriented” thinking can often lead to being first in line when permanent Junior Legal Secretary or Compliance Officer roles open up.
Technical Interview Prep: Possible Questions
- “How do you handle high-pressure deadlines while maintaining quality?”
- Tip: Talk about prioritization. Mention using tools like MS Outlook calendars or “To-Do” lists to track the “Role Family Operations” tasks.
- “Why corporate law over private practice (litigation)?”
- Tip: Focus on Prevention over Cure. Explain that you are interested in how legal frameworks can help a business grow safely and protect its clients’ aspirations.
