Intern Designer/Developer | IMS (Lonehill)

IMS is officially recruiting a creative and tech-savvy Intern Designer/Developer to join their growing team in Lonehill, Johannesburg. This role is a “hybrid” creative position, perfect for someone who enjoys both the visual artistry of design and the logic of front-end web development.

IMS is looking for a self-starter who values a relaxed yet high-performance culture—the kind of place where your talent matters more than whether you’re wearing a jacket with flip-flops.

The Role: Visual Development & Web Creation

As an intern, your primary goal is to learn while contributing to real-world projects. You will move between designing the “look and feel” of a brand and actually building the digital platforms that host it.

Key Responsibilities

  • Web Development: Building, testing, and maintaining websites using the WordPress CMS and working with various themes.
  • Visual Design: Creating layouts, typography, color palettes, content pages, and digital banners.
  • Front-End Coding: Using HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript to bring designs to life in a browser.
  • Content Creation: Designing visual elements in Adobe Photoshop and experimenting with videos and animations.
  • Continuous Learning: Upskilling daily under the guidance of experienced team members.

Qualification & Requirements

  • Education: A tertiary qualification in Multimedia Design or Web Design, OR a strong portfolio if you are a self-taught learner.
  • Technical Basics: Basic knowledge of HTML5, JavaScript, CSS3, and Adobe Photoshop.
  • CMS Knowledge: Familiarity with the WordPress platform.
  • Bonus Points: Experience with Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, or a basic understanding of PHP.

Interview Prep: Possible Questions

  • “Why did the chicken cross the road?” * Context: This is in the job ad! It’s a test of your personality and creativity.
    • Tip: “To get to the IMS offices in Lonehill because it heard they produce awesome work.”
  • “Who is more awesome: Deadpool, Black Panther, or Scarlet Witch?”
    • Context: Another specific question from the ad.
    • Tip: Choose one and give a “designer” or “developer” reason. For example: “Deadpool, because he breaks the fourth wall—just like great design should engage the user directly.”
  • “What is your process for troubleshooting a layout issue in CSS?”
    • Tip: “I use the Chrome Inspector tools to check the box model, verify my selectors, and ensure there are no conflicting styles. I’m a fan of ‘Clean Code’ principles even as a junior.”

Career Advice for IMS Applicants

  1. Portfolio First: For a design/dev role, your portfolio is your true resume. Ensure it is hosted online or attached as a clean PDF.
  2. Culture Fit: This ad is full of personality. When you email Francois, don’t just send a generic template. Be creative, be professional, and show that you actually read the instructions.
  3. Basic Tech Check: You don’t need to be an expert, but you should know how to navigate WordPress and understand the difference between margin and padding in CSS.
  4. Location: This is a 100% on-site role in Lonehill. Ensure you have reliable transport to the office before applying.
