Career Advice: Breaking into Data Centre Operations

  1. Understand the IBMi Advantage: The IBMi (formerly AS/400) is a robust, mid-range server system used by large banks, retailers, and insurance companies for its high security and stability. Having this on your CV as your first role makes you a niche specialist, which is often more lucrative than being a generalist.
  2. The Reality of Shift Work: Data Centres never sleep. Working rotational shifts requires high discipline. In your interview, emphasize your reliability and how you manage your focus during night shifts or early mornings.
  3. Process is Key: Operations roles are about following “Runbooks” (structured procedures). Show the recruiters that you are methodical, follow instructions to the letter, and have high attention to detail.
