University of Pretoria: 12-Month Internship Opportunities

The University of Pretoria (UP) is inviting 8 energetic and motivated recent graduates or young professionals to join their team for a structured 12-month internship. This is a prestigious opportunity to gain hands-on experience within a world-class academic and research environment.


Position Details

  • Employer: University of Pretoria
  • Total Positions: 8
  • Duration: 1 July 2026 – 30 June 2027
  • Location: UP Campus (Candidates must reside within 50km of the campus)
  • Remuneration: Monthly stipend + training allowance

  • Department of Statistics: 5 positions
  • Department of Research and Innovation: 3 positions

Minimum Requirements

To qualify for this intake, applicants must meet the following strict criteria:

  • Citizenship: Must be a South African citizen.
  • Age: Between 18 and 34 years.
  • Education: Minimum of Matric (Relevant Diplomas or Degrees are highly preferred).
  • Experience: Must never have held a full-time position or participated in a previous internship/learnership.
  • Status: Not currently enrolled in full-time studies.
  • Vetting: Must be willing to undergo background, credit, and criminal checks.

  • “Why are you interested in the field of Statistics within an academic setting rather than a corporate one?”
    • Why they ask: They want to see if you value the research and educational mission of the University.

    • Why they ask: Accuracy is the cornerstone of the Statistics department.

Department of Research & Innovation Focus

  • “What is your understanding of ‘Innovation’ in a university context, and how do you think it benefits society?”
    • Why they ask: This department bridges the gap between academic research and real-world application.
  • “How would you handle managing multiple administrative tasks for different research projects simultaneously?”
    • Why they ask: Multitasking and organization are key in the DRI.
