Indalo Inclusive South Africa NPC is officially recruiting for a Project Intern to support the Just Energy Transition (JET) Programme. This 12-month internship is strategically based at the DARDLEA (Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs) offices in Mpumalanga.
Starting 1 April 2026, this role puts you at the center of South Africa’s shift from coal-dependency to a sustainable, green economy—a critical move for the Mpumalanga province.
The Role: Coordinating a “Just” Transition
The Just Energy Transition is not just about changing technology; it is about ensuring that workers and communities in Mpumalanga are not left behind as coal mines and power stations close. As an intern, you will help bridge the gap between environmental policy and social impact.
Key Responsibilities & Learning Areas
- Project Coordination: Assisting with the administrative and logistical rollout of JET initiatives within the DARDLEA framework.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Supporting workshops and meetings between government, local communities, and green-energy businesses.
- Research & Reporting: Gathering data on climate change impacts and sustainable development opportunities in the province.
- Sustainability Advocacy: Promoting the benefits of a low-carbon economy to local agricultural and rural stakeholders.
Minimum Requirements
- Education: Undergraduate Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Studies, Social Sciences, or a related field.
- Location: Must be able to work on-site at the DARDLEA offices in Mpumalanga.
- Interest: A demonstrated passion for climate change, social justice, and sustainability.
- Attributes: Strong organizational skills, ability to work within a government setting, and excellent communication skills.
Interview Prep: Possible Questions
- “What do you understand by the term ‘Just’ in Just Energy Transition?”
- Tip: “The ‘Just’ refers to social equity. It means ensuring that the move to green energy includes social support, new job opportunities, and economic safety nets for the communities in Mpumalanga who currently rely on the coal value chain.”
- “How can Social Science graduates contribute to an environmental project like this?”
- Tip: “Climate change is a human issue as much as a technical one. Social scientists help understand community resistance, facilitate public participation, and ensure that new policies are culturally and economically appropriate for the people they affect.”
- “Mpumalanga is the heart of SA’s coal industry. What do you see as the biggest challenge for this transition?”
- Tip: “The biggest challenge is balancing long-term environmental goals with short-term economic survival. My role as an intern would be to support projects that provide immediate, tangible alternatives for those affected by the transition.”
