HESTO Harnesses Internship Available

HESTO Harnesses, based in Stanger (KwaDukuza), KwaZulu-Natal, is one of the largest component manufacturers in South Africa. They specialize in the design and assembly of wiring harnesses (the “nervous system” of a vehicle) for global automotive giants like Toyota, Ford, and Isuzu. As part of the Metair Group, HESTO operates a high-volume, precision-driven plant where efficiency and quality are world-class standards.

Role Overview & Key Responsibilities

This 24-month programme offers a deep dive into the operational heart of automotive manufacturing.

  • Industrial Engineering Interns: You will focus on Process Optimization. This includes time studies, line balancing, waste reduction (Lean Manufacturing), and improving the flow of the assembly lines.
  • HR Interns: You will be immersed in Large-Scale Workforce Management. This includes recruitment for the plant, industrial relations (dealing with unions), payroll administration, and employee wellness in a high-pressure environment.
  • Mentorship: You will work directly under seasoned engineers or HR managers to move from “textbook” knowledge to practical industry application.

Minimum Requirements

  • Industrial Engineering: BEng or BSc in Industrial Engineering.
  • Human Resources: BCom, BA, or a relevant HR Diploma/Degree.
  • Citizenship: South African Citizen.
  • Status: Recent graduate seeking initial workplace experience.

Career Advice: The “Manufacturing” Mindset

  1. Lean is Life: For Engineers, brush up on Six Sigma and Kaizen principles. HESTO’s success depends on “Continuous Improvement,” so showing you understand how to save 5 seconds on a production line is a win.
  2. The “People” Scale: For HR graduates, understand that HESTO employs thousands of people. Mentioning your ability to handle high-volume administrative tasks or your interest in Labor Law (LRA) will set you apart.
  3. Location Readiness: HESTO is located in Stanger/KwaDukuza. If you are not from the area, be prepared to discuss your relocation plan. The automotive industry starts early (often 6:00 or 7:00 AM), so proximity is key.
  4. Resilience: Manufacturing is fast-paced and can be loud and demanding. Show that you are someone who is comfortable “on the floor” (the factory) and not just behind a desk.

Possible Interview Questions

“For Engineers: What is ‘Line Balancing’ and why is it important in a harness assembly plant?”

  • Answer: “Line balancing ensures that every workstation has an equal amount of work, preventing bottlenecks. In harness manufacturing, it ensures the ‘nervous system’ is built steadily without some workers being overwhelmed while others are idle.”

“For HR: How would you handle a conflict between a supervisor and a production line worker?”

  • Answer: “I would remain neutral, listen to both sides, and refer to the company’s internal code of conduct and the LRA. My goal would be to resolve the issue fairly while ensuring production isn’t disrupted.”

“Why the automotive industry? What attracts you to HESTO specifically?”

  • Answer: “The automotive sector is the backbone of SA’s manufacturing. I want to work at HESTO because of the sheer scale of the operation and the opportunity to learn how global quality standards are maintained locally.”

  • Location: Stanger (KwaDukuza), KwaZulu-Natal.
