AWS believes in hiring the curious—those who think big and want to define the world of tomorrow. Through the Commercial Sales Internship Program, AWS South Africa aims to cultivate the next generation of cloud leaders by embedding them into agile, cross-functional EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) market teams.

Key Responsibilities & A Day in the Life
As a Commercial Sales Intern, you will be fully immersed in the “Amazonian” way of working:
- Customer Challenge Mapping: Learning to identify client friction points, business requirements, and how AWS cloud infrastructure adds commercial value.
- Agile Project Delivery: Working within structured agile frameworks to build and present alternative solutions to corporate business units.
- Tech Stack Mastery: Building an intensive, data-driven understanding of the AWS solution portfolio, with a massive focus on emerging AI services.
- Stakeholder Interfacing: Comfortably communicating across diverse walks of life, modifying your tone to translate complex technical architectures into simple, value-driven business terms.
Career Advice for AWS Applicants
- Infuse Your CV with Amazon Leadership Principles: Amazon’s entire assessment pipeline is anchored heavily around their Leadership Principles (such as Customer Obsession, Ownership, Bias for Action, and Learn and Be Curious). Structure your project descriptions using these exact words.
- Quantify Your Data & Problem-Solving Approach: AWS values a data-driven mindset. Instead of writing “Assisted with a university project,” write: “Analyzed a data set of 500+ records using Excel to isolate a project bottleneck, improving team delivery speed by 15%.”
- Have Your Verification Documents Ready: By law, Amazon must verify your legal right to work in South Africa. Ensure you have clean, separate PDF scans of your ID Document or Passport, an updated CV, and your complete academic transcript ready for the online assessment gateway.
The AWS Selection & Interview Process
If your initial application matches the system criteria, you will move through a multi-stage selection funnel:
- Online Assessment: An initial virtual screening evaluating your logical problem-solving and basic analytical aptitude.
- First Virtual Interview: A behavioral discussion focused on your learning agility, technical curiosity, and communication style.
- Final Round (Interviews + Case Studies): A combination of live business case evaluations and structured behavioral panels measuring your alignment with Amazon’s core operating principles.
Sample Prep Questions:
- Question (Customer Focus): “Can you tell us about a time when you went above and beyond to solve a complex problem for a client, student organization, or team member? How did you identify what they truly needed?”
- Question (Learn & Be Curious): “The cloud and AI landscape shifts weekly. Walk us through a highly complex technical tool, digital concept, or software platform you taught yourself from scratch outside of your standard university curriculum. What was your process?”
