About GHM & The Junior Health and Safety Officer Role
GHM is a leading specialist in container handling equipment, material handling machinery, and heavy mining infrastructure across South Africa.
GHM is seeking a motivated, professional Junior Health and Safety Officer based at their Head Office in Boksburg (Bartlett). This role is a Limited Duration Contract (LDC) designed for an ambitious HSSE candidate looking to expand their portfolio. The successful candidate will assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining SHE systems across GHM’s three key branches (Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town), ensuring full compliance with local statutory legislation including the OHS Act, COIDA, and the Environmental Conservation Act.
Key Responsibilities & Core Workstreams
In this operational HSSE position, your daily deliverables will cover four primary safety and administrative pillars:
1. SHE System Maintenance & Statutory Compliance
- System Implementation: Assist in building and maintaining Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) systems aligned with South African legislation (OHS Act, COID Act, Environmental Acts).
- Audit Preparation: Coordinate required medical surveillance, monthly safety inspections, internal audits, and routine safety checks across all departments.
2. Incident Investigation & Risk Mitigation
- Root Cause Analysis: Assist in investigating workplace incidents, accidents, and near-misses, compiling reports and following up on corrective action plans.
- Contractor Oversight: Conduct safety inductions for external contractors and verify their compliance with GHM safety standards.
3. Training, Meetings & Toolbox Talks
- Safety Training: Identify training needs, coordinate safety workshops, lead daily/weekly toolbox talks, and maintain detailed training registries.
- Safety Committees: Coordinate monthly safety committee meetings, compile safety reporting packs, and update emergency evacuation plans.
4. HSSE Administration & PPE Management
- PPE Control: Manage the issuing, inventory tracking, monitoring, and documentation of all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Document Control: Maintain clean, audit-ready safety files, risk assessments, and safe working procedures (SOPs).
Candidate Profile & Requirements
To qualify for entry into this Health & Safety position, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Educational Qualifications:
- Grade 12 / Matric Certificate.
- SAMTRAC or NEBOSH Certificate (Compulsory).
- Work Experience: 1 to 2 years of practical HSSE compliance experience in a industrial, mining, machinery, or logistics environment.
- Licenses & Personal Checks:
- Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
- Clear criminal record and sober habits.
- Technical & Admin Competencies:
- Computer literacy essential (Proficient in MS Office: Outlook, Word, and Excel).
- Strong administrative, document management, and organizational capabilities.
- High attention to detail with the ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Location: Based in or able to commute daily to Boksburg (Bartlett), Gauteng, with capacity to support JHB, DBN, and CPT branch safety matters.
