IT Naledi Solutions is seeking a dedicated Junior Firewall Engineer to join its specialized security team in Cape Town. Operating primarily in a remote capacity, this role is dedicated to supporting a high-profile enterprise client, handling day-to-day firewall administration, configuration updates, network security rules, VPN support, and proactive troubleshooting.

Key Responsibilities & Daily Deliverables

The Junior Firewall Engineer will support network security operations across four primary functional areas:

1. Firewall Operations & Policy Management

  • Rule & Policy Changes: Implement, review, and maintain firewall rules, Network Address Translation (NAT) policies, and security profiles based on authorized change requests.
  • Deployments & Configurations: Assist in configuring, testing, and deploying new firewall devices and network security appliances.

2. Network Security, VPN & Incident Troubleshooting

  • VPN Support: Configure and troubleshoot IPsec site-to-site VPN tunnels and Remote Access VPNs for remote enterprise users.
  • Operational Troubleshooting: Investigate, diagnose, and resolve network connectivity issues, packet drops, and security policy blocks using firewall logs and traffic monitoring tools.

3. Ticket Management & Enterprise Client Support

  • Service Desk Support: Manage, update, and resolve enterprise ticketing system queues within strict SLA timeframes.
  • Monitoring & Incident Response: Monitor security logs, system health indicators, and real-time alerts to maintain uptime for critical client infrastructure.

4. Network Documentation & Compliance

  • Infrastructure Records: Produce and update accurate network topology diagrams, change-log histories, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and security baseline documentation.

Candidate Profile & Minimum Entry Requirements

To qualify for consideration for this position at IT Naledi Solutions, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Experience & Job Focus:
    • 1 to 3 years of production firewall experience (Essential).
    • Firewall administration must have been a primary job function in your previous role (Essential).
  • Technical Core Competencies:
    • Strong foundational networking knowledge (TCP/IP, routing, switching, VLANs, subnetting).
    • Demonstrated experience with firewall policies, NAT rules, VPNs, log analysis, and traffic inspection.
  • Certifications & Qualifications:
    • Must hold a relevant industry or vendor firewall qualification (e.g., Palo Alto PCNSA/PCNSE, Fortinet NSE 4, Check Point CCSA, Cisco CCNA Security, or equivalent) (Essential).
  • Vendor Experience:
    • Hands-on experience with Palo Alto Networks or Fortinet firewalls (Highly Advantageous / Beneficial).
  • Location & Soft Skills:
    • Must be based in Cape Town (Essential).
    • Good written and verbal communication skills with strong technical documentation ability.
