Opportunity Horticulture Learnership 2026 – JCPZ

Location: Various Regions within Johannesburg

Duration: 12 Months (Fixed Term)

Company Profile: Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo

JCPZ is the entity responsible for the city’s botanical gardens, parks, nature reserves, and the world-famous Johannesburg Zoo. Their mission is to maintain a green, sustainable city. As a learner here, you are not just “gardening”—you are practicing Urban Forestry and Conservation.

The Role: Horticulture Learner

You will be trained to transform and maintain public spaces. You will work with a wide variety of flora, from indigenous South African trees to exotic ornamental flowers.

Key Training Outputs

  • Plant Maintenance: Soil preparation, pruning, and professional fertilization.
  • Propagation: Learning how to grow new plants from seeds and cuttings in a nursery environment.
  • Pest & Weed Management: Identifying and removing “Alien Invasive” species that threaten local biodiversity.
  • Machinery Training: Learning to safely operate industrial mowers, brush cutters, and irrigation systems.

Career Advice: Growing Your Future

1. Physical Preparedness

This is a manual labor role. You will be working in the sun, rain, and cold. In your application, emphasize that you are physically fit and enjoy active, outdoor work.

2. Focus on “Invasive Species”

South Africa has strict laws regarding alien invasive plants. Understanding which plants “don’t belong” in Johannesburg is a huge part of this job. Familiarize yourself with the CARA (Conservation of Agricultural Resources Act) basics.

3. Safety First

Working with pesticides and heavy machinery (like mowers) is dangerous. JCPZ takes Health & Safety very seriously. Show that you are a responsible person who follows protocols strictly.

Horticulture Interview Prep: Possible Questions

  • “Why are you interested in Horticulture rather than an office job?”
    • Answer: “I have a passion for the environment and sustainability. I prefer hands-on work where I can see the physical results of my labor, such as a well-maintained park or a healthy nursery.”
  • “What do you know about soil preparation?”
    • Answer: “Soil is the foundation of plant health. It involves testing for drainage, adding organic matter or fertilizer based on the plant’s needs, and ensuring the soil is aerated so the roots can breathe.”
  • “How would you handle a situation where you see a colleague ignoring safety rules while using a mower?”
    • Answer: “Safety is a priority at JCPZ. I would immediately remind my colleague of the protocol for their safety and the safety of the public, and if the behavior continued, I would report it to the supervisor.”
