About Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) & The Murex MX.3 Role

Rand Merchant Bank (RMB), the corporate and investment banking division of FirstRand Group, is looking for a Junior Murex Engineer specializing in Testing and Automation to join its Capital Markets technology team in Johannesburg.

Murex MX.3 is the premier enterprise trading, risk management, and processing platform used across global investment banks. This hands-on junior engineering position focuses on automating test execution, building reusable MxTest regression packs, and writing Python & Bash scripts to replace manual operational checks.

This is an entry-to-junior engineering role: while you do not need to be a senior Murex specialist from day one, you must bring practical Python/Bash scripting skills, solid SQL knowledge, and an eagerness to grow into a strong Murex Quality Engineer.

Key Responsibilities & Daily Deliverables

The Junior Murex Engineer operates across five core technical pillars:

1. MxTest & Test Automation

  • MxTest Execution: Build, maintain, and run automated test scripts and regression suites using MxTest across Murex workflows, reports, and trade interfaces.
  • Test Coverage Expansion: Identify manual test scenarios that can be converted into automated, repeatable scripts to accelerate deployment cycles.

2. Python & Bash Operational Scripting

  • Automation Development: Write clean, modular Python and Bash scripts to automate file comparisons, log analysis, data preparation, and batch checks.
  • Operational Optimization: Eliminate manual testing friction by building utilities that automate repetitive reconciliation and environment validations.

3. Data Validation & SQL Querying

  • Data Reconciliation: Execute SQL queries across Murex and relational databases to compare expected vs. actual trade results, positions, and output feeds.
  • Test Data Management: Prepare, structure, and validate XML, CSV, and JSON test datasets for automated pipeline runs.

4. Defect Analysis & Root-Cause Troubleshooting

  • First-Level Diagnostics: Analyze test logs, system outputs, and error stack traces when automated runs fail before escalating to senior developers or business analysts.
  • Defect Tracking: Log detailed defect reports with supporting SQL extracts, logs, and repeatable steps.

5. Release Engineering & Documentation

  • Regression cycles: Support System Integration Testing (SIT), User Acceptance Testing (UAT), and post-release validation for Murex upgrades.
  • Runbook Maintenance: Maintain clear, version-controlled documentation for all automation scripts, runbooks, and test cases.

Candidate Profile & Minimum Entry Requirements

To qualify for consideration for this position, applicants must meet the following mandatory criteria:

  • Educational Qualifications:
    • Completed Bachelor’s Degree, Higher Diploma, or equivalent qualification in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Finance, or a related discipline (Essential).
  • Core Technical Skills:
    • Scripting Proficiency: Practical experience with Python and Bash/Shell scripting in Unix/Linux environments (Essential).
    • Database Skills: Solid SQL skills for querying, validating, and extracting data (Essential).
    • Software Testing Foundations: Clear understanding of software testing principles, test execution, defect lifecycles, and regression testing (Essential).
    • Data Structures: Ability to navigate and inspect structured data formats like XML, CSV, and JSON (Essential).
  • Preferred / Advantageous Skills (Not Mandatory):
    • Direct exposure to Murex MX.3 or MxTest automation tooling.
    • Knowledge of Capital Markets trade lifecycles (front-to-back office, settlements, risk, confirmations).
    • Familiarity with CI/CD tools (Jenkins, Git) and basic AWS/Cloud concepts.
