About Gulf Associates & The Commercial Advisory Team
Gulf Associates is a specialized commercial advisory firm that steps away from abstract consultancy theory to provide direct, grounded decision support to chief executives and sovereign entities.
Currently supporting a major infrastructure development and logistics project in a growing regional market, Gulf Associates is hiring a Data Analysis Intern. Working directly under senior partners, you will organize, model, and analyze raw commercial data to help clients make high-stakes capital deployment decisions, evaluate competitor behavior, and prepare for critical negotiations.
Key Responsibilities & Daily Analytical Duties
In this role, your daily operational deliverables will cover four primary areas:
1. Data Structuring & Financial Modeling
- Data Cleaning: Collect, organize, and clean raw datasets from commercial and public sources to ensure all models are built on verified facts.
- Cost & Competitor Modeling: Build and maintain financial models tracking competitor behavior, trade flow patterns, and regional logistics costs.
- Data Auditing: Audit third-party reports and external market data to uncover inconsistencies, gaps, or questionable assumptions.
2. Commercial Research & Scenario Analysis
- Counterparty Research: Conduct targeted research on key counterparties to evaluate their market positioning and strategic moves.
- Trade Flow Patterns: Identify trade and investment patterns to feed into scenario planning for major capital investments.
3. Executive Reporting & Negotiation Support
- Summary Briefs: Draft clear, jargon-free analytical summaries to help senior partners prepare positioning for client negotiations.
- Deal Logic Reports: Assist in creating reports focused on real-world commercial logic rather than theoretical projections.
4. Project Tracking
- Engagement Maintenance: Collaborate with senior partners to keep project trackers current and aligned with active advisory engagements.
Candidate Profile & Requirements
To qualify for this remote internship, candidates should possess:
- Excel Mastery: A strong grasp of Microsoft Excel and the ability to organize large datasets while keeping commercial goals in focus.
- Quantitative Mindset: High attention to detail, evidence-based problem-solving skills, and a rigorous approach to checking analytical accuracy.
- Clear Communication: Ability to write in a direct, professional tone without relying on corporate jargon.
- Market Interest: Genuine curiosity about high-stakes decision-making, specifically where private commercial entities and state/sovereign capital overlap.
- Remote Discipline: Self-motivated and proactive in a fully remote work setting.
- Location: Based in South Africa (Johannesburg / Remote).
What Gulf Associates Offers
- Competitive Pay: Paid internship with a competitive rate aligned with the market.
- 100% Remote Flexibility: Work remotely from anywhere in South Africa.
- Direct Mentorship: Direct daily exposure to senior partners who participate in top-level client negotiations.
- Real-World Impact: Your analytical outputs directly shape strategic decisions on large-scale infrastructure projects.
Career Advice for Applicants
- Showcase Practical Excel & Data Skills: Emphasize hands-on Excel capabilities (e.g., nested formulas, data validation, pivot tables, scenario modeling) on your CV rather than just listing software tools.
- Focus on Commercial Realism: Gulf Associates prioritizes real-world market logic over theoretical models. Tailor your cover letter or CV summary to highlight your practical problem-solving approach.
- Demonstrate Concise Writing: Ensure your resume and application responses are concise, clear, and free of filler words.
