About the Opportunity & Client-Site Environment
Alteram is an established, technology-driven business solutions provider specializing in managed IT infrastructure, system integration, high-volume service desk configurations, and professional ICT consulting services. By aligning cutting-edge software deployment with corporate operational goals, the group enables enterprise clients across both the private and public sectors to optimize their digital landscapes.
The Alteram Talent Acquisition Division is launching its structured IT Graduate Internship pipeline. These entry-level positions are deployed directly to active, high-yield client offices and regional municipal hubs across the Western Cape. Serving as a crucial career launchpad, the program bridges the gap between academic ICT theory and live enterprise technical support, offering young professionals direct exposure to real-world network administration, client infrastructure troubleshooting, and hardware lifecycle management.
Available Placement Hubs & Geographic Routing
To ensure regional accessibility, candidates will be mapped directly to local client operational facilities. Alteram is recruiting for on-site interns across the following specific Western Cape areas:
- Cape Town CBD (Metropolitan Core)
- George Area (Garden Route Region)
- Beaufort West Area (Central Karoo Region)
- Worcester (Cape Winelands Region)
- Vredendal (West Coast Region)
- Malmesbury (Swartland Region)
Technical Scope & Core Learning Domains
Under the active mentorship of senior systems engineers and regional IT supervisors, the graduate interns will manage day-to-day operations across three primary technical quadrants:
1. End-User Computing (EUC) & Service Desk Support
- Frontline Diagnostics: Provide tier-1 technical support both remotely and on-site, capturing, logging, and diagnosing user hardware and software malfunctions.
- Operating Systems Deployment: Assist with patch management, virus removal, software configuration upgrades, and clean operating system installations.
- Peripherals Troubleshooting: Configure and optimize network print servers, localized peripheral devices, and user workstation access profiles.
2. Local Area Network (LAN) & Infrastructure Maintenance
- Connectivity Resolution: Troubleshoot basic localized network connectivity failures, checking physical switch ports, patch cables, and access points.
- Active Directory Admin: Assist with user identity administration, tracking password reset requests, and managing internal access rights under security protocols.
3. Asset Management & Data Governance
- Inventory Auditing: Maintain precise digital records of client IT hardware assets, tracking system serial numbers, software licenses, and components used.
- Technical Reporting: Support team leads by compiling clean weekly diagnostic performance data and service level agreement (SLA) milestone sheets.
Candidate Profile & Strict Eligibility Criteria
To satisfy Alteram’s strict corporate audit framework and youth development mandates, applicants must strictly match the following profile:
- Academic Credentials: Must possess a completed Bachelorβs Degree or a Diploma in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a closely related quantitative field.
- Basic Foundation: A valid Grade 12 / Matric Certificate.
- Experience Baseline: 0 to 1 year of experience in IT (perfectly configured for pure graduates or early-career technical assistants).
- Youth Development Filter: Must be between 18 and 35 years of age.
- Legal & Location Status: Valid South African citizenship, residing within or in close commuting proximity to one of the specified Western Cape placement hubs.
Required Technical & Behavioral Competencies
- Methodical Troubleshooting: A strong, logical, and structured approach to tracking down software errors and hardware anomalies.
- Articulate Communication: Excellent interpersonal communication skills to explain technical troubleshooting procedures politely to non-technical corporate end-users.
- Precision Focus: High attention to detail when compiling system inventory data and logging network service records.
- Growth Orientation: Self-motivated, proactive, and exceptionally eager to learn and adapt inside a fast-paced client-site workspace.
Career Advice for Western Cape IT Applicants
- Highlight Your Specific Region Clearly: Alteram is deploying technicians across six vastly different areas of the Western Cape. To ensure the candidate tracking systems route your application to the correct office, place your residential town in bold font right beneath your contact details at the very top of your CV (e.g., “Location Focus: Worcester Region”).
- List All Practical Lab Work and Tools: Since this is an entry-level position, recruiters look for hands-on potential. Dedicate a section of your resume to “Academic Projects & Technical Exposure” to showcase your experience formatting PCs, configuring routers, working with Windows/Linux environments, or building databases.
- Keep Your Document Format High-Contrast: Ensure your digital CV is compiled cleanly into a professional, single-column PDF file that details your qualification modules accurately, allowing the screening managers to scan your technical skill keywords quickly.
Sample Interview Preparation Questions
Technical Logic & IT Infrastructure Questions
- Question (Logical Network Fault-Finding): “A client user reports that their office computer suddenly has ‘no internet access’ while the printer next to them is still working over the network. Walk us through the logical physical and software-based steps you would take to find and fix this fault.”
- Question (System Imaging and Governance): “When deploying a clean operating system image onto a client workstation, why is it critical to adhere strictly to standardized company guidelines rather than customizing the settings yourself?”
Behavioral & Client-Site Adaptation Questions
- Question (Managing End-User Stress): “In a busy corporate or municipal office environment, users can become highly frustrated when their IT systems slow down their daily work. How do you use your communication and interpersonal skills to keep the customer calm while you work to resolve their technical issue?”
- Question (Prioritizing Tasks Independently): “Imagine being the primary intern on-site at a regional client office, and three different employees submit urgent IT support requests at the same time. How do you evaluate which technical issue to resolve first?”
