About Hytec Engineering & The Assessor Role

Hytec Engineering, a business unit within the Bosch Rexroth Africa Group, is Africa’s leading specialist in the design, manufacture, repair, and testing of hydraulic cylinders and components for mining, industrial, and mobile applications.

Hytec Engineering is seeking an experienced, detail-oriented Assessor to join its specialized workshop team in Kempton Park. In this technical role, you will physically inspect and technically evaluate hydraulic cylinders, barrels, rods, pistons, glands, and seals to determine wear patterns, failure modes, precision tolerances, repairability, and the complete required scope of work.

Key Responsibilities & Daily Deliverables

The Mechanical Assessor will execute technical evaluation tasks across four main operational pillars:

1. Technical Inspection & Damage Assessment

  • Job Card Review: Review job cards, customer specifications, engineering drawings, and historical repair data prior to physical tear-down inspection.
  • Cylinder Evaluation: Inspect hydraulic components (barrels/tubes, chrome rods, pistons, glands, threads, seal grooves) for wear, scoring, corrosion, bending, alignment, and coating/chrome breakdown.
  • Failure Analysis: Identify root-cause failure modes (e.g., fluid contamination, impact damage, thermal stress, misalignment) and evaluate reusability vs. repairability within technical standards.

2. Precision Measurement & Tolerancing

  • Metrology Equipment: Utilize precision measuring instruments including micrometers, vernier calipers, bore gauges, thread gauges, dial test indicators (DTI), and coating thickness meters.
  • Drawing Interpretation: Interpret complex engineering drawings, surface finish callouts, and manufacturing tolerances, or work accurately from approved physical samples.

3. Quality Compliance & Scope Documentation

  • Scope Creation: Produce accurate, detailed damage reports and technical scopes of work for machining, fitting, planning, and estimation departments.
  • Non-Conformance Escalation: Identify and report non-conforming components and escalate unusual, safety-critical, or technically uncertain findings to the Estimator or Production Manager before repairs begin.

4. Safety & Continuous Technical Improvement

  • Workshop Compliance: Strictly observe workshop safety regulations, occupational health standards, and quality management protocols.
  • Technical Currency: Stay updated on modern hydraulic cylinder repair methods, advanced materials, sealing technologies, and hard-chrome/plating solutions.

Candidate Profile & Minimum Entry Requirements

To qualify for consideration for this position at Hytec Engineering, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Educational Qualifications:
    • Grade 12 / National Certificate (Essential).
    • Recognized Trade Test / National Trade Qualification as a Fitter & Turner, Machinist, or Mechanical Fitter (Highly Advantageous).
  • Experience Requirements:
    • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in hydraulic cylinder repair, precision engineering, machining, or a heavy mechanical workshop environment (Essential).
    • Direct experience in manufacturing or repairing hydraulic cylinders and internal components (Essential).
  • Technical Skills & Tool Proficiency:
    • Proven ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, dimensional tolerances, and technical specifications.
    • Demonstrated proficiency using precision measuring instruments (micrometers, bore gauges, verniers).
  • Working Conditions & Personal Attributes:
    • High level of attention to detail and sound technical judgment under operational pressure.
    • Willingness to work overtime and adhere to strict production timelines.

What Hytec Engineering Offers

  • Industry Leadership: Work with Africa’s premier hydraulic cylinder design and repair enterprise.
  • Group Perks: Access to stability, training, and career progression within the broader Bosch Rexroth Africa network.
  • Technical Environment: Exposure to modern precision machining, heavy hydraulic testing, and advanced engineering technologies.

Career Advice for Hytec Engineering Applicants

  1. Highlight Hydraulic Cylinder Expertise: Clearly outline your 5+ years of experience with hydraulic cylinder tear-downs, rod inspections, bore gauging, and tolerance verifications on page 1 of your CV.
  2. Quote Reference Number: Include Ref: BOS260929-1 in your cover letter and application subject line.
  3. Emphasize Metrology Skills: Detail your practical experience with precision instruments like bore gauges, micrometers, and surface roughness measuring tools.

Sample Assessor Interview Questions

Hydraulic Cylinder Diagnostics & Quality Control

  • Question (Failure Identification): “When evaluating a damaged hydraulic chrome rod, how do you differentiate between wear caused by fluid contamination vs. side-load misalignment or mechanical impact?”
  • Question (Tolerancing & Repairability): “What step-by-step process do you follow when deciding whether an oversized cylinder barrel can be honed and fitted with an oversized piston, or if it must be completely replaced?”
