Kagiso Media has partnered with Voice of Wits (VOW FM) and the Wits Radio Academy to offer THREE (3) news graduate internships. This 12-month joint programme rotates interns every 6 weeks between Jacaranda FM’s state-of-the-art commercial newsroom in Midrand and VOW FM’s campus broadcasting studio in Braamfontein. Interns will receive hands-on journalism mentorship, field reporting exposure, bulletin reading experience, and formal short courses through the Wits Radio Academy.
Key Responsibilities & Dual Newsroom Workstreams
Interns will gain practical experience by rotating across both commercial and campus broadcast environments:
1. Commercial Newsroom Operations (Jacaranda FM – Midrand)
- Journalism Support: Assist senior journalists with story research, interview scheduling, and news desk operations.
- Field Reporting: Conduct field reporting, gather audio clips, and compile radio news stories.
- Audio Production: Operate field recording devices and studio audio editing tools to package news clips.
2. Bulletins, Current Affairs & Digital Media (VOW FM – Braamfontein)
- Bulletin Reading: Compile and read daily live news bulletins on air.
- Current Affairs Packaging: Produce, edit, and package current affairs stories and long-form radio packages.
- Digital Journalism: Update station social media channels and digital platforms with real-time news breaking updates.
- Academic Training: Undertake specialized broadcast journalism short courses delivered by the Wits Radio Academy.
Candidate Profile & Requirements
To qualify for entry into this radio news internship, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Academic Qualification: Completed Bachelor’s Degree or 3-Year National Diploma in Journalism, Media Studies, Communication, or a closely related field.
- Language Skills: Excellent command of written and spoken English. Bilingualism in Afrikaans and English is highly preferred.
- Core Technical Skills:
- Quality scriptwriting and audio voicing for radio broadcasting.
- Strong fact-checking capabilities, high attention to accuracy, and news judgement.
- Basic familiarity with operating studio equipment, field recorders, and audio editing software.
- Driver’s License: Valid driver’s license (or actively in the process of obtaining one).
- Flexibility & Mobility: Must be able to commute between Midrand (Jacaranda FM) and Braamfontein/Johannesburg (VOW FM) on a 6-week rotation basis.
- Commitment: Must be fully available for the 12-month contract and not committed to full-time studies or other employment.
