The Accounts Receivable Internship is an intensive 12-month development program within Sybrin’s corporate Finance function. Operating on a hybrid work setup out of either Johannesburg or Cape Town, the intern will gain hands-on exposure to debtor management, cross-border payment allocations, Acumatica ERP processing, and Withholding Tax (WHT) documentation under the direct mentorship of the Financial Manager.
Key Responsibilities & Core Workstreams
During this 12-month finance internship, your deliverables will span six primary workstreams:
1. Customer Accounts Receivable & Payment Allocations
- Remittance Matching: Assist with accurately allocating customer payments and credit notes against remittance advices in Acumatica ERP.
- Reconciliations: Identify unallocated cash, investigate allocation queries, and support monthly Accounts Receivable (AR) ledger reconciliations.
- Withholding Tax (WHT): Assist with identifying and recording Withholding Tax deductions on cross-border African client accounts.
2. Customer Collections & Debtor Ageing
- Credit Control: Follow up on outstanding customer invoices according to agreed credit terms and debtor ageing schedules via telephone and professional email.
- Escalations: Escalate overdue accounts, payment disputes, and collection risks to senior Finance team members.
3. Withholding Tax (WHT) Certificate Management
- Document Collection: Collect outstanding Withholding Tax Certificates from corporate and international clients within required statutory timelines.
- Audit Compliance: Maintain records of received vs. outstanding WHT certificates to support internal and external financial audits.
4. ERP Customer Data & Onboarding
- Data Maintenance: Update and maintain complete customer billing records, tax documentation, and payment terms in Acumatica.
- Record Keeping: Organize electronic finance files to ensure audit-ready document retrieval.
5. Cash Flow Forecasting & Collection Tracking
- Collection Forecasting: Maintain the expected collection month schedule and update payment commitments on the debtor collection report.
- Activity Logs: Record clear, traceable notes following all customer interactions.
6. Finance Administration & Month-End Support
- Reporting: Assist with compiling AR reports, debtor ageing analysis, and supporting schedules for month-end financial reporting.
Candidate Profile & Requirements
To qualify for entry into this 12-month finance internship, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Educational Qualifications:
- Grade 12 / Matric.
- Completed or currently completing a Certificate, Diploma, or Degree in Accounting, Finance, Financial Management, or a related discipline.
- Work Experience (Advantageous):
- 0 to 2 years of experience in Accounts Receivable, debtor management, or finance administration.
- Basic exposure to customer invoicing, payment allocations, or credit control.
- Familiarity with cross-border African transactions, multi-currency environments, and Withholding Tax (WHT) is beneficial.
- Software & Technical Competencies:
- Working knowledge of MS Excel (formulas, data handling, filters) and MS Office.
- Willingness to learn enterprise financial systems (Acumatica ERP exposure is advantageous).
- Behavioral & Compliance Attributes:
- High numerical accuracy, strong attention to detail, and good verbal/written communication skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold quality/security standards (ISO 9001, ISO 27001, POPIA, GDPR).
- Locations: Based in or near Johannesburg or Cape Town (Hybrid model).
